The Monacan Nation
Monacan Indian Health Clinic
The Monacan Indian Health Clinic, funded by Indian Health Service, will provide comprehensive and culturally aware and culturally sensitive health care to our Native American communities. This clinic has several exam rooms, for behavioral health, dental and general exams. This facility also has a drive thru pharmacy for ease of access for patients.
The Monacan people embody an extraordinary tale of survival and resilience. Their presence in the Mid-Atlantic region spans over 10,000 years, with their original territory covering more than half of present-day Virginia. Unlike the Algonquin-speaking tribes encountered by English settlers in Jamestown, the Monacans were Siouan speakers, believed by scholars to have migrated eastward from the Ohio River Valley. Today, the Monacan Indian Nation comprises approximately 2,600 members.

“When I was growing up, I had to fight to go to school in Amherst County,” remembers the Chief. “So to stand here today and break ground for a clinic for the Monacan people and Indian people, it’s a dream.”
-Chief Branham, Monacan Indian Nation
